Eastern Cape Midlands

Click Here To Visit http://www.easterncapemidlands.co.zaA visit to the Eastern Cape would not be complete without spending some time in the heart of the province, the Eastern Cape Midlands. The cultural heartbeat of the province lies here, in this most pristine of country areas, where time seems to stand still and locals welcome you like old friends. Arguably the area’s most alluring feature is the dramatic diversity of landscape that covers the second-largest region of the province, with the Karoo-like arid regions of the west giving way to the high, mountainous regions of the central areas, which in turn transform into the wild and open areas of the east. This sense of wide open space and fresh country air is a lasting theme throughout the region, which boasts numerous high-quality game reserves and hunting or safari opportunities. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find a region more perfectly suited to outdoor pursuits than the Eastern Cape Midlands. Adventure activities abound, ranging from those requiring nerves of steel, such as white-water rafting, to the more serene pastimes like leisurely strolls in the great outdoors and the more skilled, such as fly-fishing in some of the country’s finest trout dams and rivers. Rock paintings from the country’s earliest inhabitants, the San people, provide a unique eye into the world of many generations ago. Most of the paintings are mapped out, but there are still many that lie undiscovered in the more remote areas of the region. Perhaps the most underestimated attraction in the Eastern Cape Midlands is the abundance of cultural and heritage sites that exist in the area. This is an area that played a significant role in the liberation of South Africa and the routes not only provide valuable insight into the struggle heroes and places but into the heart and soul of a people who fought tirelessly to free themselves from an unjust system of government. It is here where the great struggle icons Chris Hani, after whom the municipal district in named, Walter Sisulu, Dr AB Xuma and James Calata were born and In almost every town and remote rural area you can find traces of the local heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for freedom The Chris Hani District Municipality has developed four intriguing tourism routes that traverse the Midlands and highlight the numerous important tourist attractions, including those of cultural and historical interest. Although the routes may overlap at certain points, the four paths offer a comprehensive guide to the life and times of the Eastern Cape Midlands. Best travelled at one’s own pace, the routes aim to preserve both the present and the history of this remarkable area.

Latest Sightings

Click Here To Visit https://www.latestsightings.comLatest Sightings was established in 2012 by schoolboy Nadav Ossendryver. As an obsessive Kruger Park visitor Nadav’s favourite pastime was asking his parents to flag down passing motorists and asking them what they had seen. Eventually they tired of this hobby and began to say no. Nadav looked to technology to solve his problem. He established Latest Sightings and from there it quite literally exploded! The community is extremely loyal and without question “obsessed” about wildlife and the amazing Kruger Park! Many followers chat with friends daily on the WhatsApp groups, whether they’re in the Park or in the office. They share incredible video content through the Latest Sightings YouTube channel and it has quickly become one of the top ten most viewed channels in South Africa. When Nadav is in the Kruger Park, a new holiday favourite is getting the community together on the deck after a day’s viewing, to meet, chat and share tales. A great way to end off. Latest Sightings is a great way to meet like minded people and to explore your passion for wildlife. Like our Facebook page or download the app to become part of the fastest growing wildlife group in SA.

North Coast

Click Here To Visit http://www.northcoast.org.zaAs one heads north up the coast out of Durban towards Richards Bay, the big N2 freeway bypasses some of the prettiest beaches in KwaZulu-Natal. So, it is worth taking the smaller coastal roads, such as the M4, past Sibaya Casino, Umdloti, King Shaka International Airport and the beautiful upmarket Zimbali estate and golf course. This is where you will find the small holiday towns of Ballito, Salt Rock, Umhlali, Tinley Manor, and Zinkwazi, before making your way back onto the freeway and across the enormous John Ross Bridge to the Tugela Mouth where KZN’s biggest river, the mighty Tugela, gushes out into the Indian Ocean. Two great South African leaders had their homes in this region and today lie buried here. King Shaka Zulu is buried near the town of Stanger, also known as KwaDukuza, and Chief Albert Luthuli is buried nearby. Albert Luthuli was the first, and one of three South Africans to be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, the other two being Mr Nelson Mandela, and Mr FW de Klerk who were jointly awarded the prize. The Luthuli Museum near Groutville provides interesting information about the life of the great South African leader, Albert Luthuli. A large Indian community is settled on KZN’s North Coast, enlivening the area with beautiful temples, lush market gardens and farms, numerous fresh produce markets and delicious, spicy Indian cuisine. The North Coast has always been popular with anglers because the fishing is so good. This may be due to the many sheltered lagoons which open into the Indian Ocean and which serve as nurseries for small fish and other sea creatures. The area is also known for its good surf and the internationally recognized Ballito Pro Surfing Competition, which draws competitors from all over the world, is held in Ballito annually. A little inland from the Zulu hilltop homestead-themed Sibaya Casino is the small village of Mount Moreland. Here, a viewing site has been established for the public to come and observe an estimated 3 million barn swallows (some 13% of the world’s population) which make their way to this wetland to roost between November and April annually. Outside the domestic holiday season and long-weekends, many of these places are quiet and peaceful. However, during the seasonal influx of vacationers, the many holiday homes, excellent restaurants and nightclubs fill up, as do the family experiences such as beach days, kiddies’ animal farms and the crocodile farm. Many visitors enjoy taking a break on mountain bike trails through the sugar cane fields and forests, or with a few rounds of golf at one of the many excellent North Coast golf courses.

Peter's Guide Books

Click Here To Visit http://petersguide.co.za/index.php/stabilensPeter Derichs was born in Germany in 1947. At age 8 his family emigrated to South Africa. At an early age he developed an interest in animals and the outdoors. After matriculating in Cape Town he eventually ended up in South West Africa (Namibia) working for the Hydrology section of the Department of Water Affairs. For 6 years he spent 3 weeks per month travelling the length and breadth of that beautiful country. His travels took him to the Skeleton Coast, Bushmanland, Kaokoland, Ovambo, Caprivi, the Diamond Sperrgebiet and Southern Angola. During this time he developed a passion for photography and some of his photos are still available as postcards in Windhoek today. After graduating from University of South Africa, he and his wife moved to Richards Bay in Kwa-zulu Natal and eventually to Johannesburg. Like millions of South Africans, he took every opportunity he could get to travel to the various National Parks. On one of his numerous trips to the then Gemsbok National Park (Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park) it struck him that although he had been there on many occasions he did not know what he was looking at. What did the place name mean? What tree is that? How deep is the water? What is the quality of the water? What happened here historically? He realized that if he did not know the answers, there must be many people who did not know them either. The idea of a totally different guidebook was born. It must be simple; it must have all the information on one page; there must be a visual reference for the visitor, in short, a 12 year old must be able to understand it. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park was printed in 2001. By 2016 over 15 000 copies had been sold. The feedback was so positive that he decided to tackle the Kruger National Park. This book was published in 2008 and re-printed in 2016. Since then the Augrabies Falls National Park and the Addo Elephant National Park have also been published. Bowing to popular demand the books were then developed as an app. The Kruger, Kgalagadi and Addo books are available as an iPad app.

Accommodation varies from up-market hotels to camping facilities, and everything in between. Swim in the surf or just laze on the South Coast beaches, working on your suntan. Three beaches, namely Ramsgate, Marina Beach and Lucien, have International 'Blue Flag' status. For the golfer, the South Coast is close to golfing paradise. Named by many 'The Golf Coast', there are nine excellent 18- hole golf courses, two of which are rated amongst the top 12 in the country. If you want to commune with nature, visit the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve, which conserves plants found nowhere else in the world, or go birding - 400 bird species have been counted along this coastline. Scuba diving is a popular sport on the South Coast with excellent deep-sea diving areas at Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks. Try surfing at the internationally acclaimed surf spots or go abseiling in the Oribi Gorge. Breathtaking is the way you would describe both the scenery and your feelings as you plunge over the edge and swing high over the deep gorge. Every winter, there is the phenomenon of the sardine run - millions of sardines migrate up the coast, accompanied by dolphins and other large fish and thousands of sea birds which feed on them, and people come from far and wide to scoop up buckets of this natural harvest.
